All praise be to Allah.

Who are double-faced people? They are those people who meet people according to what the person may like. They have a different way of treating and interacting every other person. They are sweet to your face but mock you behind your back. They flatter you in your presence but insult you as soon as you leave. They talk bad about others in front of you and backbite you in front of others.

Allah, the Exalted, says:

“They may hide (their crimes) from men, but they cannot hide (them) from Allah; for He is with them (by His Knowledge), when they plot by night in words that He does not approve. And Allah ever encompasses what they do.” (4:108) Allah says that is aware of what they do. However the

y hide their intentions, they cannot hide it from Allah. Allah says, their behavior is not approved and will cause them punishment from the Almighty.

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) had condemned such people on countless occasions and in numerous narrations.

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said, “People are like ores. Those who were excellent in the Days of Ignorance are excellent in Islam provided they acquire the knowledge and understanding of the religion. You will find the best people in it (Islam) those who had a deep hatred (for leadership). You will find the worst among the people a double-faced person who appears to some people with one face and to others with another face.”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim].

Muhammad bin Zaid reported: Some people said to my grandfather, ‘Abdullah bin ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them): We visit our rulers and tell them things contrary to what we say when we leave them. `Abdullah bin `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) replied: “In the days of the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam), we counted this act as an act of hypocrisy.”

What we can conclude from this is that the act of being double-faced is considered as the hypocrisy i.e. Munafiqat. And Allah does not like Munafiqoon. The severity of the punishment of Munafiqoon is mentioned in Quran on numerous occasions. It is one of the major sins and includes all the sins of lies, cheating, backbiting, envy, hatred, jealousy etc.

My dear brothers and sisters, beware of this sin. Avoid it. Be natural. Do not pretend and indulge Munafiqat(Hypocrisy)

May Allah guide us all.
